For two of my nephews I think it was the perfect solution as to how to get away from their ultra-strict elder father while still having his approval.
I think in many ways it is sort of the dub equivilent to serving in the military, away to get out of the house and get some independence yet still gain approval.

I agree with Badger, it was a great trump card to play when it was decided to ban an activity, or at the very least strongly discourage it. It was the catchall for, well we can't really come up with any good reason not to do this other than it might take time away from the borg and it will reduce us being different from everybody else, so we'll just say that it has some pagan origins and shut it down.
the wife of one of our lawyers is a judge here in dallas, and i overheard her husband telling a couple of other lawyers about this really tough case she has right now: deciding to issue a court order to give blood to premature twins whose parents are witnesses.
i popped in with "i'm an ex-jw -- ask me anything" so he and i started talking about the blood issue.
the father of the twins was in tears in the courtroom -- not because of his babies getting blood but because he was afraid he would be accused of giving his consent to the blood transfusion.
Melmac, I don't think the elders are representing the father in lieu of counsel, I think what was meant was that they were advising the father as to what he could say and do and not get df'd, but they were not acting as a legal representative before the court.

Nina, Excellent advice, I have quite a few physician clients and have been doing alot of asset protection for them as they are in the bullseye here in Ohio. But as I have been doing it and with the estate planning I have realized that you are totally correct, medicaid/asset protection planning for the elderly is a huge and to a large extent untapped field. I have been using my continuing ed credits to bone up on the subject and plan on making that a new focus of my practice. You can only lose your soul if you have one to lose, gets into a whole nother discussion topic there. Big Dog

Nina, I'm a tax attorney, accounting, then a joint program where I got a Masters in Tax and my law degree. I do alot of straight tax work, plus asset protection, estate planning, business formation, research. I do a little civil litigation just to keep things interesting. That pressure cooker stuff wasn't for me, though tax work can be stressful depending on the situation (like the IRS wants to put my client in jail, then it can get a little dicey), but not typically like those boys.

I could have written your post, with the exception of being straight my experience was almost identical, from a very young age things just did not seem right and the older I got the worse it was. I have often wondered how many people were like me in that aspect that the religion just never fit from day one.
